Earlier this week, we talked about accessories that would spice up a minimalist room that begged for just a little more decor. One such piece was the sunburst clock, a popular piece of decor because of its versatility as it could also be a mirror or picture frame. Today, we’re going to walk you through the steps of creating a sunburst frame on your own, so you don’t have to break the bank to spruce up your space!
The great thing about fashioning a sunburst frame is that it only requires four items, that all can be found around your home.
To make this stylish frame, all you need is:
- A piece of cardboard
- 200 drinking straws – preferably straight, but bendy will work
- A glue gun
- Spray paint
Once you have all the supplies, turn on the glue gun to allow it to warm up. Cut the piece of cardboard into a circle that is the size you wish your frame to be and is at least 3 inches thick – you want a good base to glue the drinking straws to.
After the glue gun is warm enough, start gluing full straws to the cardboard circle. If you are using bendy straws, make sure the bendy part is glued closer to the base. Be sure to leave a little space between each of the straws. It is important that you glue the straws straight from the inside of the cardboard circle to the outside of it so that it stays circular and you don’t end up with an uneven circle.
Once you have straws surrounding the entire cardboard circle, cut half of the remaining straws into three-quarter length pieces and glue them in between the full-length straws around the entire circle. Then, cut the rest of the straws into halves and glue them into the leftover spaces. This creates the different levels of the frame.
After the cardboard circle is completely covered with levels of different length straws, you are ready to spray paint! Metallic silver was used for this frame because it matches well with most color schemes, but feel free to use any color!
Voila! You’re ready to set a picture in your sunburst picture frame and mount it on a wall using any type of command strip or hook that you can easily attach to the back of the cardboard base.
